How
to Register to Vote You are eligible to vote in Connecticut if
you are at least 18 years of age, a U.S. citizen, and a resident of a Connecticut
town. You may also pre-register at age 17, and you can then vote when you turn
18. Persons convicted of a felony must apply in person at their registrar's office
after completion of all aspects of their sentence. Choosing a party or not is
your choice. If you wish to join a party, simply indicate on the voter
registration application. Declaring a party enables you to vote in that party's
primary election, which is open only to party members. You may also choose not
to register with a party - as "unaffiliated".
Election Day is the first Tuesday after the
first Monday in November. You must register to
vote by noon the last business day before a primary or 14 days before a general
election. You may declare party affiliation by noon the last business day before
a primary or change your party affiliation up to 3 months before a primary.
To change from unaffiliated to a political party
having a primary, you must come into the Registrar of Voters Office by noon the
day before the primary, or if you choose to mail the voter registration form,
it must be postmarked 14 days before primary.
Residents of Trumbull, Connecticut may
register to vote at the Registrar of Voters Office in Town Hall in person, or
they may register by mail. Mail registration forms may be obtained at any Connecticut
town hall, public library, or registrars office. Voter registration forms are
also available from the State of Connecticut Web site at http://www.sots.ct.gov/electionsservices/elecform.html. NOTE:
As of January 1, 2003, additional information is required by Help America Vote
Act Public Law 107-252 to register to vote by mail. ONE
of the following must be submitted to the Elections Administration Department
with Voter Mail-in Applications: -- A copy of photo ID (e.g., driver's
license) -- Current utility bill -- Bank statement -- Paycheck or
-- Government document that shows the name and address of the voter The
item must be attached to an application and the last four digits of the social
security number must be written on the application form next to the last name.
Failure to provide this information will create a delay at the polls during Federal
Election Day. Although there are no length of
residency requirements, you will need proof of town residency, proof of age, and
if a naturalized citizen, proof of U.S. citizenship. You must be at lease 18 years
of age on or before an election. Convicted felons must have completed confinement
and parole if previously convicted of a felony and have had their voting rights
restored by the Registrars.

Changing
Party Affiliation
In order to
change your party affiliation, you must fill out a new application to vote and
indicate the party with which you want to affiliate. If
you want to change parties, it takes three months from the date you apply until
your new party affiliation is effective. If you are an unaffiliated voter and
want to register with a party affiliation, complete the voter registration form
and your new affiliation is effective immediately. To
change from unaffiliated to a political party having a primary, you must come
into the Elections Administration Department by noon the day before the
primary, or if you choose to mail the voter registration form, it must be postmarked
14 days before primary.

Voting
in a Primary Election Only registered voters affiliated with a
political party can vote in that party's election. For example, if you are a registered
Democrat, you can vote only in a Democratic primary. Unaffiliated voters cannot
vote in any primary election.
